The making of "Down The Rabbit Hole"

Down the rabbit hole artstation store

This 3 hours tutorial is both an analysis of the piece and a general overview of the process I use for illustration. From concept, composition and storytelling to technical aspects in Zbrush, Keyshot and Photoshop, I'll take you through the foundations of creativity and visual language I use when I'm making an image.

Structure of the tutorial:

  • After going through the elements of inspiration, such as themes and references, I'll talk in depth about the symbols and their specific use in the visual storytelling of the piece.
  • I'll explain the two main elements of creativity, which are free association and combinatory plays.
  • Then, I'll emphasize the structure of the composition and its use in the narration.
  • Starting at 40", and during 2h20", I'm covering many of the key technical and creative aspects of the execution in Zbrush, Keyshot and Photoshop, such as: sculpting and modeling efficiently for illustration, thinking a 3D camera as a 2D canvas, using focal length as composition device, painting with light and shadow, rendering for compositing in photoshop, paintover techniques, color schemes, atmospheric depth and much more.

Software used in the tutorial: Zbrush, Keyshot, Photoshop.
